Plans: Pro and Business, and the free trial. This page covers what the Media Library itself accepts. Each network has its own, stricter rules for posts. Those are on How long can my post be, and how big can my files be?

The library’s limits

These limits are the same on Pro, Business and the free trial.
The upload box says “SVG, PNG, or GIF. Max size 20Mb”. That line is out of date. The real limit is 2 GB per file, and any image or video type is accepted.

Which file types work

The library takes any file your browser sees as an image or a video. Anything else, like a PDF or a Word file, is turned away with “Only images and videos can be uploaded.” Being in the library doesn’t mean a network will take it. Some formats upload fine, but a network may refuse them when the post goes out. Examples are SVG, HEIC, BMP or TIFF images, and AVI, MKV or WebM videos. For posts, these are the safe picks:
  • Images: JPG or PNG. GIF and WebP work on some networks.
  • Videos: MP4. X also takes MOV.
If your phone saves photos as HEIC, change the camera setting or convert the file before you upload it.

How big a file can be

Each file can be up to 2 GB. A bigger file shows “Failed to upload media file.” in the upload list. Remove it, shrink or trim it, and try again. Big videos take a while to upload. Keep the window open until the progress circle finishes. Networks set lower limits for posts. For example, X takes videos up to 512 MB and Bluesky up to 50 MB. The full table is in Image and video limits for each network.

How many files at once

On the Media Library page, add up to 10 files at a time. If you upload more, you get an error. The files are still saved, but at the top level instead of the folder you’re in. In a post, you can attach up to 8 files. A Reel or Story takes one. When you hit the limit, the Add media icon is grayed out with “No more media can be attached”.

What each import option lets you pick

Imported files follow the same 2 GB limit. See Import media from other apps or a link.

Video thumbnails

Custom thumbnails for videos have their own size and type rules for YouTube, Instagram and Facebook. See Thumbnails.
