# How do I organize the Media Library with folders?

> Create folders and subfolders in the Media Library, rename and move them, move files between them, and delete a folder with everything in it.

**Plans:** Pro and Business, and the free trial.

Folders keep your library tidy. Make one per client, campaign or topic, and put folders inside folders if you need to. Everyone in the workspace sees the same folders.

## Create a folder

<Steps>
  <Step title="Go to where the folder should live">
    Open **Media Library**. To make a subfolder, open the folder it belongs in first.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Click New folder">
    The **New folder** window opens.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Name it and click Create">
    Type a name in **Folder name** and click **Create**. You'll see "Folder created successfully."
  </Step>
</Steps>

Names can be up to 255 characters. Two folders in the same place can't share a name. If you try, you'll see "The name has already been taken." Folders in different places can have the same name.

## Open a folder and find your way back

Click a folder to open it. The page title changes to the folder's name, and a trail of links appears above it. Click **Media Library** in the trail to go back to the top, or click **Go Back** to go up one level.

Each level shows only its own files. The top of the library shows files that aren't in any folder.

To upload straight into a folder, open it first and click **Add Media**. The upload window says "Uploading to" and the folder name. See [Upload photos and videos](/help/media/upload-media).

## Rename a folder

Click the three dots on the folder, then **Rename**. Change the name in the **Rename folder** window and click **Save**. You'll see "Folder updated successfully."

## Move a folder

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the folder's menu">
    Click the three dots on the folder, then **Move to…**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Pick where it goes">
    The **Move to folder** window lists your folders. Pick one, or pick **Library root** to move it to the top level.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Click Move here">
    The folder moves with everything inside it.
  </Step>
</Steps>

A folder can't go inside itself or one of its own subfolders, so those don't show in the list.

## Move files into a folder

For one file, click the three dots on it and choose **Move to folder…**.

For several, click each file to select it. In the **Manage Media** bar at the bottom, click **Move**. Pick a folder, or **Library root**, then click **Move here**. You'll see a message like "Moved 3 files."

Moving a file doesn't change any post that uses it.

## Delete a folder

<Warning>
  Deleting a folder also deletes every subfolder and every file inside it. You can't undo this in the app.
</Warning>

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the folder's menu">
    Click the three dots on the folder, then **Delete folder**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Confirm">
    A window warns that this "also deletes everything inside it, including all subfolders and media files." Click **Delete folder**. You'll see "The folder and its contents have been removed."
  </Step>
</Steps>

Want to keep some of the files? Move them out of the folder first, then delete it.

Posts that already use those files keep them, including scheduled posts. The files just disappear from the library.

## The AI Studio folder

If you use AI Studio, an **AI Studio** folder appears at the top level. PublishBuddy makes it and saves your AI Studio results there. It shows a lock and has no menu, so you can't rename, move or delete it.

You can still move files out of it, or remove single files. See [AI Studio: images and video](/help/ai/ai-studio-images-video).

## Who can manage folders

Anyone with access to the workspace can create, rename, move and delete folders. That includes editors. See [Team members and roles](/help/team-members-and-roles).
