# Connect Facebook and Instagram

> Connect a Facebook Page or an Instagram professional account, and fix the usual connection problems.

PublishBuddy connects to **Facebook Pages** and **Instagram professional accounts**. It can't post to a personal Facebook profile or a personal Instagram account. If an account doesn't show up when you connect, check that first.

## Before you start

* **Facebook:** you need a Facebook Page, and the Facebook login you use needs to manage it.
* **Instagram:** the account must be a professional account, either Business or Creator. To connect it through Facebook, you also need to link it to a Facebook Page you manage.

Switching Instagram to a professional account is free. You do it in the Instagram app's settings, under your account type.

## Connect a Facebook Page

  <Step title="Pick Facebook">
    Click **Accounts** in the sidebar, then **Add Social Accounts**. Click **Facebook**.

    Select **Page** and click **Continue**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Log in to Facebook">

  </Step>

  <Step title="Add your Pages">
    Back in PublishBuddy, a list of your Pages appears. Click **Connect** next to each one you want. Then click **Done**.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Warning>
  Turned off a permission in the Facebook window? Then you'll see this:

  "You didn't grant all required permissions, some areas of the app will be unavailable."

  Connect again and keep every permission on.
</Warning>

## Connect Instagram

When you pick Instagram, you get two options:

* **Instagram via Facebook** is the default. You log in with Facebook and pick the Instagram account linked to your Page.
* **Instagram** lets you log in with Instagram itself. No Facebook Page needed.

Both work the same once connected. They post the same things (photos, carousels, videos, Reels and Stories) and get the same analytics and comment inbox. Pick **Instagram via Facebook** if you already run the account through a Facebook Page. Pick **Instagram** if it isn't linked to one.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Pick Instagram">
    Click **Accounts** in the sidebar, then **Add Social Accounts**. Click **Instagram**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose how to log in">
    Select **Instagram via Facebook** or **Instagram**, then click **Continue**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Log in">
    Log in in the window that opens. With Instagram via Facebook, share the Page that goes with your Instagram account.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Add the account">
    Click **Connect** next to the account, then **Done**.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Note>
  Instagram posts need media. A text-only post to Instagram stops with "Instagram does not support this type of post."
</Note>

## If something goes wrong

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="Missing Facebook Data or Missing Instagram Data">
    The full message reads: "We didn't receive any data from Facebook, please ensure you enable all permissions and try again."

    It means no new Page or account came back. The usual causes:

    * You only have a personal profile, or the Instagram account is personal.
    * You didn't tick the Page when Facebook asked which Pages to share.
    * The Instagram account isn't linked to a Page (for **Instagram via Facebook**).
    * Everything you shared is already connected.

    Fix the cause, click **Try again** and keep every Page and permission ticked.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Facebook hasn't given PublishBuddy access to this Page">
    Do what the message says. In Facebook, go to **Settings**, then **Business integrations**. Open PublishBuddy, tick the Page and save. Then reconnect the Page in PublishBuddy.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Your Facebook session has expired">
    Facebook ended the login. Reconnect the account (below) and try again.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="An account needs to be reconnected">
    On **Accounts**, click the **⋯** menu next to the account and choose **Reconnect**. For Facebook, **Reconnect All** reconnects every Page at once. Log in with the same Facebook or Instagram account.

    When Facebook asks which Pages to share, keep that Page ticked. If it isn't ticked, the reconnect does nothing.

    Not the workspace owner? Your reconnect only fixes your own connection. See [Reconnect an account](/help/connect-accounts#reconnect-an-account).
